North West Parks & Tourism Board Advances Cashless Gate System to Modernize Visitor Experience North West Parks & Tourism Board Advances Cashless Gate System to Modernize Visitor Experience

On 1 December 2025, the North West Parks & Tourism Board (NWPTB) implemented a new card-only, cashless gate-taking system at two of its flagship reserves: Pilanesberg National Park and Kgaswane Mountain & Nature Reserve. This upgrade is a key component of the NWPTB’s broader Turnaround Strategy, which aims to modernize and strengthen revenue collection processes across the provincial nature reserve network.

The NWPTB has confirmed that this cashless system will soon be rolled out to all remaining reserves under its management in the North West Province. By standardizing gate operations, the Board expects to reduce financial risks, improve financial controls, and enhance operational efficiency across its portfolio of protected areas.

Since its activation, the new system has reportedly operated smoothly without any disruptions, according to a press release dated 9 December 2025. Visitors to Pilanesberg and Kgaswane have already benefited from faster entry processes and improved facility management, with the NWPTB highlighting that these changes also support wildlife conservation and local employment opportunities.

Looking ahead, the NWPTB is finalizing the launch of a new online booking and payment platform. This digital system will enable visitors to plan their trips, secure bookings, and complete payments conveniently online. The platform is expected to further enhance visitor experience while generating increased revenue streams that can be reinvested into conservation efforts across all provincial reserves.

This move aligns with the NWPTB’s mandate to conserve biodiversity and promote sustainable tourism in the North West Province, as outlined in the North West Parks Board Act and supported by the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT).

Overall, the transition to cashless gate systems and digital booking platforms represents a significant step forward in modernizing the management of North West’s protected areas. For tourism professionals and visitors alike, these innovations promise a more seamless, secure, and environmentally responsible experience while supporting the long-term sustainability of the region’s natural heritage.
