Zimbabwe’s Tourism Sector Welcomes Visionary Leadership to Boost Global Competitiveness
The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) has taken a decisive step to elevate the country’s tourism profile by appointing Dr. George Munyaradzi Manyaya as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective from 1 February 2026. This strategic leadership change is poised to reinforce Zimbabwe’s position as a compelling destination on the regional and international tourism map.
Dr. Manyaya arrives with a formidable combination of academic prowess and practical expertise across diverse sectors that underpin tourism growth. His educational background is distinguished, holding a Doctorate in Business Management, alongside master’s degrees in International Relations and Strategic Management and Corporate Governance. Complementing these are professional qualifications in Mass Communication, Diplomacy, and Regulation, equipping him with a robust foundation in policy formulation, stakeholder engagement, and public communication.
His career trajectory spans critical industries such as aviation, transport, telecommunications, energy, mining, banking, and international development through his work with the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM). This multisectoral experience provides Dr. Manyaya with a unique vantage point to understand and harness the interconnected elements essential for tourism development, including infrastructure, investment, and cross-sector collaboration.
Before joining ZTA, Dr. Manyaya held the position of General Manager for Marketing, Communications, and Stakeholder Relations at ZESA Holdings. There, he spearheaded strategic branding efforts and enhanced institutional partnerships, earning recognition as a skilled marketing and communications strategist. His leadership in reputation management and stakeholder confidence building will be invaluable as Zimbabwe seeks to amplify its tourism appeal.
Dr. Manyaya’s governance credentials are equally impressive. He currently chairs the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA), where he has driven successful rebranding, governance reforms, and modernization initiatives. These efforts have significantly improved institutional efficiency and public trust—qualities that will benefit the ZTA as it navigates a competitive global tourism landscape.
His direct ties to the tourism sector include his role as a Tourism Brand Ambassador and participation on the Organising Committee of the 2013 UNWTO General Assembly, co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Zambia. This experience underscores his deep understanding of international tourism dynamics and destination marketing.
As CEO, Dr. Manyaya’s mandate is clear: to position Zimbabwe as a competitive and attractive tourist destination by driving sustainable tourism development, enforcing industry standards, generating actionable tourism intelligence, and fostering collaboration between public and private stakeholders. His leadership will also focus on facilitating sustainable investment that supports national economic growth, employment creation, and foreign exchange earnings.
The ZTA Board has expressed strong confidence that Dr. Manyaya’s appointment will inject fresh strategic direction at a pivotal moment for Zimbabwe’s tourism sector. The country is actively working to consolidate recent gains, diversify its market base, and enhance the quality of its tourism products. Zimbabwe’s wealth of natural attractions, cultural heritage, and expanding infrastructure offers a solid foundation for this growth.
For Africa’s tourism industry, Zimbabwe’s renewed leadership signals exciting opportunities. The country’s commitment to strengthening its tourism ecosystem aligns with broader continental ambitions to boost travel, investment, and sustainable development. Dr. Manyaya’s multifaceted expertise and visionary approach are expected to catalyse Zimbabwe’s emergence as a standout destination, inspiring confidence among investors, operators, and travellers alike.
As the tourism landscape evolves, Zimbabwe’s focus on strategic branding, stakeholder coordination, and sustainable growth will be critical. The appointment of Dr. Manyaya marks a new chapter, promising to enhance the country’s global visibility and competitiveness while contributing meaningfully to Africa’s expanding tourism narrative.
