TUI Cruises Commits to Full Winter Season in Southern Africa for First Time
German cruise operator TUI Cruises has announced a significant expansion of its presence in Southern African waters, with plans to deploy one of its vessels for an entire winter season in the region. This move represents a meaningful vote of confidence in the continent's growing appeal as a cruise destination and creates fresh opportunities for travel professionals across Africa.
Beginning in November 2027, the cruise line will position Mein Schiff 5 in Southern African waters for the duration of the winter season. The vessel will operate a series of fourteen-day roundtrip voyages departing from Cape Town, connecting South Africa with some of the Indian Ocean's most sought-after island destinations. This marks the first occasion that the brand has committed to such an extended focus on the region.
The itineraries promise to showcase a diverse range of ports and experiences. Passengers will have opportunities to visit South African coastal cities including Gqeberha, Durban and Richards Bay, each offering distinctive attractions and cultural experiences. International calls will include the tropical islands of Mauritius and La Réunion, adding exotic Indian Ocean flavour to the voyages.
Additional sailings are expected to incorporate Namibian ports as part of repositioning cruises and longer itineraries, further expanding the geographical reach of the programme. Such routes would allow passengers to experience the dramatic landscapes and wildlife of Namibia's Atlantic coastline.
For African travel professionals, this development carries considerable significance. The deployment reinforces Cape Town's growing status as a turnaround port for international cruise operations. Unlike simple port calls where ships arrive and depart within hours, turnaround operations see passengers beginning and ending their voyages in the city. This generates substantially greater economic benefit through pre-cruise hotel stays, airport transfers, tours and other ancillary services.
The trend of major cruise lines using South African ports as seasonal transition hubs continues to strengthen. The country's strategic location between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, combined with steadily improving cruise infrastructure, makes it an increasingly attractive proposition for operators seeking to reposition vessels between hemispheres.
Travel professionals should note that this Southern African programme forms part of a broader global deployment strategy for the winter 2027/28 season. TUI Cruises will position multiple vessels across key markets worldwide, including the Caribbean, Canary Islands, Asia and Northern Europe. This global spread demonstrates the operator's ambition and financial commitment to diverse itineraries.
In the Caribbean region, several Mein Schiff vessels will operate roundtrip and repositioning cruises connecting North American gateways with island destinations across the region. Routes will include Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, St. Lucia, Martinique and Antigua among their calls.
The Asian market will also see continued expansion, with Mein Schiff 6 scheduled to reposition via Africa before operating two-week cruises in Southeast Asia. Destinations on offer will include Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam, appealing to travellers seeking cultural immersion and exotic experiences.
Closer to Europe, the Canary Islands will host two vessels offering island-hopping itineraries ranging from seven to eleven nights. These sailings will visit Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Madeira and Fuerteventura, with additional calls in Morocco, the Azores and Cape Verde.
Pricing across the winter programme varies according to itinerary length and destination, with entry-level fares beginning from around seven hundred euros for shorter Canary Islands cruises. African sailings, given their longer duration and more exotic routing, will command premium pricing that reflects the unique experiences on offer.
As bookings open and further itinerary details emerge, African travel industry professionals would be wise to familiarise themselves with the product offerings. The cruise sector continues to demonstrate robust growth potential across the continent, and those positioned to capture this demand stand to benefit considerably in the seasons ahead.
