Malawi Airlines Calls For Government Bailout
Malawi Airlines is seeking 385 million kwacha MWK (US $ 527,000) in financial assistance from the government to secure payment of salaries and aircraft rental costs until August. The company has not generated any revenue since the suspension of its operations on March 25, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In an interview with The Nation newspaper published on June 3, the chief financial officer of the carrier, Wube Atlaw, said that he had asked the government to pay the salaries and the costs of hiring planes on his two planes- a B737- 700 and a Dash 8-400. "It is true that we had meetings with the Ministry of Finance on the possible bailout, in particular in two areas, therefore salaries and aircraft rental costs from April to August. Malawi Airlines employs 86 people and spends approximately 77 million MWK (105,000 USD) per month.
According to Williams Banda, the spokesman for the Ministry of Finance, discussions have also been opened between the government and Ethiopian Airlines which holds 49% of the stakes in the company.
