Ghana: After 5 years of closure, Sunyani airport to reopen in October
If all goes according to plan, Sunyani Airport in west-central Ghana is expected to reopen in two months. This is the assurance given to the Minister of Aviation, Joseph Kofi Adda, who carried out a site inspection visit on August 8, 2020.
According to Resources Access Limited (RAL), the company in charge of the first phase of the platform rehabilitation project, it will reopen next October, with 85% of the work being completed.
The scope of work includes the resizing of a parking area, the resurfacing and extension of the airstrip, as well as the separation of the departure and arrival hall. This first phase, currently being completed, is valued at 48.6 million cedis (8.4 million dollars).
Opened on July 13, 1974, Sunyani airport had suffered the wrinkles of time. The platform was closed to regular traffic in 2015 due to the advanced state of degradation of the runway and the unavailability of the apron, among others. Since then, residents of the Brong Ahafo region and surrounding areas have been forced to travel to Kumasi by road (124 km) to access air transport services.
