Equatorial Guinea: an additional 1 billion FCFA for the new terminal of the Bata int'l airport
The ongoing construction of the new passenger terminal at Bata International Airport can continue smoothly. On August 18, 2020 in Malabo, the Development Bank of Central African States (BDEAC) and the Government of Equatorial Guinea, signed an amendment of 1 billion FCFA (1.8 million dollars) to the previous loan agreement, in respect of the financing subsidy of the said project.
This intervention by BDEAC, was made through the Community Development Fund (FODEC), and is part of the financing of integrative projects of CEMAC.
The laying of the first stone of this building took place on July 30, 2019 in the presence of the President of the Republic, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. The project, scheduled to last 36 months, is being carried out by the South Korean firm ssangyong Engineering and Construction (ssangyong E&C). The new terminal, which will consist of three floors, will occupy a total area of 42,300 square meters. The cost of the works is estimated at 103 billion FCFA (186 million dollars).
Bata Airport is Equatorial Guinea's second airport after Malabo. Its modernization is part of the National Development Plan, which aims to diversify the country's economy by investing in major infrastructure that contributes to the dynamism of tourism activity. The country wants, in fact, to get rid of dependence on hydrocarbons, the basis of its economy.
Let us recall that last October, Equatorial Guinea inaugurated the new terminal at Obiang Nguema International Airport in Mongomeyen, the country's fifth hub. With the commissioning of this CFAF 95 billion ($ 171 million) infrastructure, the airport now has a capacity of 1.6 million passengers per year.
