Nacala Corridor rail line reopens
Circulation on the railway line in the Nacala corridor was restored yesterday, four days after an accident forced the suspension of service. The transport of coal, general cargo and passengers was resumed, “after a thorough analysis and reinforcement of protocols”, operating company Nacala Logistics said in a statement.
The accident in Meconta district, Nampula province, happened at night when a train collided with wagons stopped on the line, causing a derailment.
The US$4.5 billion rail line is managed by Nacala Logistics, a company formed between Brazilian multinational Vale, the Northern Development Corridor (CDN), the Nacala Integrated Logistics Corridor (CLN) and Central East African Railways (CEAR).
The extraction of coal by the Brazilian mining company Vale in the Tete region made it possible to build a 912-kilometre railway, including 200 kilometres that cross the territory of Malawi, and a deep-water port terminal in Nacala.
