RwandAir no longer wants A330neo or 737 Max
At the beginning of last year, Rwandair presented a plan to expand its fleet. Airline boss Yvonne Makolo said they wanted to buy two Boeing 737 Max and two Airbus A330 Neo. The state airline wanted to use the planes to head for new destinations from the Rwandan capital Kigali - for example New York with the A330 Neo.
Now, however, Rwandair has decided not to expand, as Makolo told Flightglobal magazine. The decision against Max was made before the Corona crisis. According to the report, the airline actually wanted to rent the Airbus A330 Neo from Air Lease Corporation, and the Boeing 737 Max from SMBC Aviation Capital.
Does Rwandair do like Air Italy?
Due to the current uncertainties, the fleet will be left unchanged for the time being, said the airline boss. A conversion is then planned with the future new partner Qatar Airways. The Qatar airline announced in February that it would take over 49 percent of Rwandair. Makolo explains that talks on this are still ongoing.
Makolo also suggests that her airline wants to make the fleet more uniform. It consists of an Airbus A330-200, an A330-300, four Boeing 737-800s, two 737-700s, two De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400s and two Bombardier CRJ 900s. If the deal with Qatar Airways comes off, Rwandair could join the airline from Qatar rent planes. The Qatar Airways holding Air Italy, which has since disappeared from the market, had also leased Flieger from the investor.
