Royal Air Maroc is planning 4 new European routes from Marrakech
Despite the uncertain future of air transport, Royal Air Maroc (RAM) wants to open four new routes from Marrakech before next winter. "If things can still change in the future, we will start with five European cities, namely Paris (road reinforcement, editor's note), Milan, Brussels, Madrid and possibly London, if the quarantine were to be lightened," said the president and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Moroccan national company to Medias24, Friday, September 18.
According to Abdelhamid Addou, this is what was agreed on September 8, following a meeting with the Minister of Tourism and Air Transport, Nadia Fettah, the Director General of the Moroccan National Tourist Office. (ONMT), Adel El Fakir, and the President of the National Tourism Confederation (CNT), Abdellatif Kabbaj.
According to Medias24, the launch of these routes will constitute a return of RAM to Marrakech, knowing that it linked this city to several European capitals under the reign of Driss Benhima (CEO of RAM from 2006 to 2016). It had been forced to close them with the arrival of competition from low-cost foreign companies.
Moreover, the carrier is currently in financial difficulty. According to its CEO, the company is losing around 50 million dirhams (4.6 million euros) per day since the suspension of scheduled flights due to Covid-19. The company has already split 140 employees, including 65 pilots. According to its rescue plan, it should lay off nearly 900 employees (150 pilots), or about 30% of its workforce.
