Burkina Faso intends to cut airline ticket tax by up to 95% Burkina Faso intends to cut airline ticket tax by up to 95%

As of January 1, 2021, Burkina Faso plans to drastically reduce the tax on airline tickets. The budget bill provides for a drop in levies of up to 95%. These reductions are intended to support the revival of the airline industry. If the budget bill for the execution of the state budget in 2021 is adopted as is, Burkina Faso will make a drastic reduction in the levy on airline tickets.

According to the current pricing, effective since January 2019, 40,000 FCFA (60 EUR) per passenger boarding in Business class and 20,000 FCFA (30 EUR) per passenger in Economy class are charged.

The new proposed prices are 2,500 FCFA (3.8 EUR) per passenger in First class, 1,500 FCFA (2.3 EUR) in Business class and 1,000 FCFA (1.5 EUR) in Economy class. This pricing concerns travel within the UEMOA (West African Economic and Monetary Union) zone. For other destinations, the levy will be respectively 7,500 FCFA (11 EUR), 5,000 FCFA (7.6 EUR) and 2,500 FCFA (3.8 EUR).

These reductions, explains the government, aim to "support air navigation companies in this difficult financial situation."

This difficulty is due on the one hand to the security situation in Burkina Faso (permanent threats of terrorist attacks), "which makes its destination not very favorable to tourism and the reception of travelers for large gatherings". On the other hand, the measures taken to limit the spread of Covid-19 in the country.
