Ghana: EgyptAir replaces Ethiopian Airlines in plan to create national carrier Ghana: EgyptAir replaces Ethiopian Airlines in plan to create national carrier

EgyptAir has been chosen by the Ghanaian state to support it in its plan to create a national airline. The Egyptian national carrier's offer is considered better than that of Ethiopian Airlines previously selected in December 2018. The Ethiopian carrier is already a shareholder in ASKY, the company based in neighboring Togo.

Against all expectations, it is EgyptAir which will be the future technical and strategic partner of the Ghanaian State in the optics of the creation of its national company. This Wednesday, October 21, AviationGhana exclusively revealed that after examination, the expert committee set up by the Aviation Ministry deemed the Egyptian national carrier's offer "better", compared to that previously made by Ethiopian Airlines.

In December 2018, the Ethiopian national flagship had signed a memorandum of understanding with Ghana for the implementation of this project. According to the latter, Ethiopian Airlines was to hold 49% of the capital of the future company, against 10% for the state and 41% for individuals and national institutions.

However, reveals the Ghanaian site, the choice of Ethiopian Airlines as a strategic partner has been delayed due to a lack of agreement on key issues such as the route network, financing and the duration of the management contract. Sources familiar with the matter evoke in particular a conflict of interest which was to arise and affect the competitiveness of the future company when Ethiopian Airlines is already a shareholder in ASKY (20%), the competing and neighboring carrier, based in Lomé, Togo.

Egyptair is today one of the most successful and stable African airlines with Africa's second largest fleet with nearly 80 aircraft. A shareholding agreement is expected to be signed with the Egyptian national carrier in the coming days. But before it comes into force, it will have to be approved by Parliament.

With a view to the creation of its future company, Ghana signed, on the sidelines of the Dubai Air Show in November 2019, a memorandum of understanding for the acquisition of three Boeing 787-9s as well as a letter of intent. the purchase of six Dash 8-400s.
