Ethiopian Airlines and Astral Aviation, the only African carriers partners of the COV initiative
In late 2020, the United Nations (UN) launched the COVAX initiative, to ensure equitable access for countries to anti-Covid-19 vaccines. The UN has partnered with 16 airlines to deliver 2 billion doses by the end of 2021 to 190 countries currently affected.
Ethiopian Airlines and the Kenyan cargo company Astral Aviation are the only African airline partners of the “UNICEF Humanitarian Air Cargo Initiative”.
Alongside AirBridgeCargo, Air France / KLM, Brussels Airlines, Cargolux, Cathay Pacific, Emirates Skycargo, Etihad Airways, IAG Cargo, Korean Air, Lufthansa Cargo, Qatar Airways, SAUDIA, Singapore Airlines and United Airlines, “these airlines have signed agreements with UNICEF to prioritize the delivery of anti- Covid-19, essential drugs, medical devices and other essential supplies to respond to the pandemic, "said the United Nations Children's Fund, in a statement released Tuesday, February 16.
