EgyptAir is working on the project of a low-cost subsidiary
Tourism activity is in bad shape in Egypt, of course due to the Covid-19 pandemic. To relaunch it, or at least stabilize it, the Egyptian authorities have been stepping up initiatives in recent months. The latest idea in this area is the creation of a low cost carrier.
Egyptair is currently working on a plan to launch a low-cost airline. The information was released on Saturday (February 20) by the Minister of Civil Aviation, Mohamed Manar, during a working visit to Hurghada, a seaside and tourist town on the Red Sea coast.
While the public carrier wants to be silent on the matter for the moment, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has indicated that the future low-cost carrier intends to position itself as a serious rival to European charter companies. Its first services will cover direct routes between the country's main tourist cities (Sharm el-Sheikh, Hurghada) and Europe, notably Italy and Germany. It will also compete with its cousin, the low-fare Air Cairo, which already connects the cities of Germany to Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh.
During his visit to Hurghada, the Minister of Civil Aviation was accompanied by his counterpart of Tourism and Monuments, Dr Khaled Al-Anani, and the Governor of the Red Sea Province, General Amr Hanafi. This visit comes within the framework of a series of meetings that the Minister of Civil Aviation and that of Tourism and Monuments wish to have with investors in the tourism sector, in the various tourism governorates. The objective is to register their requests and suggestions to support and increase tourism activity, and to learn about the challenges of the tourism industry in the midst of a health crisis.
