Ghana: Ho airport finally receives its first flight, more than 4 years after its reconstruction
Ho airport, located near the border with Togo, still does not attract domestic companies despite its reconstruction in 2016.
Located less than 20 minutes from the capital Accra, the airport appears economically unviable from the point of view operational. But Africa World Airlines (AWA) wants to take up the challenge.
The first trip to Ho airport finally took place on Thursday April 15. This was an Africa World Airlines (AWA) "familiarization flight".
"The test flight was carried out as part of the airline's preparation for the launch of scheduled commercial flights," said the private Ghanaian carrier. According to the local press, the airline was supposed to open a route from Accra last March with two weekly flights (Monday and Friday, or Thursday and Sunday).
Once operational, this route will mark the start of commercial activities at Ho airport.
Built in 2016, the infrastructure serving the capital of the Volta region, near the border with Togo, has never received any commercial theft. On September 10, 2020, the former Minister of Aviation, Joseph Kofi Adda, revealed that the country's carriers (Africa World Airlines and Passion Air) saw no economic interest in serving it. This is still relevant, according to the chief marketing officer of AWA.
“We understand and know the potential that exists in the Volta region. And we, as an airline, are ready to seize this opportunity, provided that the stakeholders accept affordable packages for the general population,”hopes Dr Ade Dayo. He wants partnerships to help provide Ghanaians with “all-in-one” tourism packages, which include airfare, ground transportation, accommodation and sightseeing.
