Tunisair returns (finally) to Libya after 7 years of absence
In 2014, Tunisair was forced to suspend its air links to Libya, a country in the grip of a fratricidal war. The Tunisian flagship thus lost an important market which represented 40% of turnover between 2012 and 2014.
7 years later, the semblance of peace found and the security of airport infrastructure reassure the carrier.
It is this Monday, May 17, 2021 that Tunisair will resume its flights to Libya after a 7-year absence. From now on, the national pavilion will connect the Tunisian capital to two Libyan cities, Tripoli and Benghazi, by A320-200.Due to changes in the flagship timetable, the inaugural flight is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. today instead of 12:10 p.m. The return flight on the same day will leave Libyan soil at 5.10 p.m. instead of 4.10 p.m. as initially planned. This resumption of Tunisair's operations to Libya will take place six months after the reopening of land and air borders between Tunisia and Libya.
The carrier will offer, from Tunis, 1 daily flight to Tripoli in competition with Libyan Airlines and Libyan Wings. On the Tunis - Benghazi route, it will offer 3 weekly flights in competition with Afriqiyah Airways. This with the possibility of increasing the number of connections in the coming months, depending on the market situation. The low-cost subsidiary, Tunisair Express, should also connect Sfax to the Libyan capital. Recall that TunisAir had suspended its services to Libya since 2014 because of the war. The company had repeatedly announced its desire to reconnect with Libya, but all attempts so far had not materialized.
