Senegal will build an airport in Kédougou in the south-east of the country Senegal will build an airport in Kédougou in the south-east of the country

Kédougou is a town located 702 km from Dakar, the capital of Senegal.  Since the discovery and industrial exploitation of gold deposits in the early 2010s, this city - close to the borders of Mali and Guinea - has experienced an economic revival.  The state now wants to turn it into a real sub-regional metropolis by developing transport infrastructure.

Kedougou, a landlocked town in the south-east of Senegal, will soon have an airport. The announcement was made by President Macky Sall on Monday 31 May 2021 during his tour of the region. "This new airport will be able to safely accommodate large aircraft [...] which will also allow for daily air transport," he said in his speech to the local authorities and population.  This airport, whose launch date is still awaited, is part of phase 1 of the Senegalese Airport Rehabilitation Programme (PRAS). This is one of the three components of the flagship project for the revival of the sub-regional air hub of the Emerging Senegalese Plan (PSE), which aims to provide the regions with airport infrastructures that meet international standards in two phases. Phase 1 of the PRAS also includes the rehabilitation of the airports of Saint-Louis, Ourossogui-Matam, Tambacounda and Ziguinchor.  The project, worth a total of 99 billion FCFA (184 million USD), has been entrusted to the Czech company Transcon Electronic Systems. The second phase, at a total cost of 39 billion FCFA (73 million USD), will consist of upgrading eight airports to international standards, namely Cap-Skirring, Kolda, Sédhiou, Simenti, Kaolack, Bakel, Linguère and Podor.
