Lufthansa returns to Port Harcourt after several months' absence Lufthansa returns to Port Harcourt after several months' absence

Due to Covid-19 and subsequent insecurity in Rivers State, several international airlines continued to suspend flights to Port Harcourt International Airport. Since last week, the relaxation of the curfew by the state government has brought reassurance.

Lufthansa is expanding its services to Nigeria. From Monday, August 2, the German national airline will resume its services to the international airport of Port Harcourt in Rivers State in the south of the country. The flights from Frankfurt will operate five times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays via Abuja. The German carrier will operate an Airbus A330-300 on this route without competition. The aircraft can accommodate up to 255 passengers in a configuration of 42 in Business Class, 28 in Premium Class and 185 in Economy Class. Lufthansa inaugurated its route to Port Harcourt on 14 April 2005.

Currently, Lufthansa serves Nigeria's two main cities, Lagos and Abuja, offering 10 weekly services between the West African country and Germany. A frequency that it plans to double in the coming months.  The reopening of Port Harcourt International Airport to international flights was announced by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) on May 4 with immediate effect. But the resumption of flights had been hampered by the curfew imposed by the local government since 29 April in an attempt to curb attacks on state security agencies. This instruction, which has been relaxed since 7 July, prohibited all human and vehicle movements throughout the state between 10pm and 6am.
