Another suspension of Kenya Airways operations on the Nairobi - Guangzhou route
Kenya Airways is really struggling on its Nairobi - Guangzhou route. Since the beginning of the year, the airline has been disrupted in its operations, having been sanctioned several times by China due to imported cases of Covid-19 among its passengers. It has been suspended for a further two weeks.
Kenya Airways' Nairobi - Guangzhou route will remain suspended again for 3 weeks from 23 August 2021, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) announced in a recent update. Indeed, 11 passengers tested positive for Covid-19 on flights KQ882 arriving in Guangzhou, China on 27 July (6 passengers tested positive) and 30 July (5 passengers tested positive) respectively.
According to a revised CAAC directive in force since December, any flight on which five to nine passengers test positive for the virus will be suspended for a period of two weeks. Beyond 10 cases, the airline will be subject to a four-week suspension on that route. Once the restriction is lifted, the carrier will be allowed to operate only one route per week.
Kenya Airways will only resume flights to Guangzhou after 6 September 2021. The airline currently operates two flights per week on Mondays and Fridays on the Dreamliner route.
This is the fourth sanction for Kenya's national flagship on this route. The carrier was last suspended in March after 28 passengers tested positive for the virus on a flight the month before.
