Niger: Niamey int'l airport gets its airport certification
The African Conference of Ministers in charge of Civil Aviation held in Abuja, Nigeria, in 2012 provided for the certification of at least one international airfield in each country by the end of 2020. The current count shows that the objective is far from being achieved, but countries such as Niger are making a positive difference.
The international airport of Niamey, the largest in Niger, has finally received its sesame. After more than a year of certification process with mid-term evaluations and staff training workshops, the platform was awarded its aerodrome certificate by the director of the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), Elhadji Ayaha Ahmed. The official handing over of the certificate to the SUMMA manager took place on Monday 13 December 2021. Valid until December 2024, this certification attests that Niamey airport now meets the international specifications of Annex 14 of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and Part 14 (Volume 1) of the Niger Civil Aviation Technical Regulations concerning facilities and technical operations. It is expected that this certification will help attract more major international airlines.

Entrusted in October 2018 to SUMMA under a 30-year concession, Niamey International Airport has been equipped with a new state-of-the-art terminal. In all, the Turkish company will have mobilised more than FCFA 100 billion (USD 173 million) in investments, including the extension of aircraft parking areas, the construction of a taxiway, a new cargo terminal and the refurbishment of the presidential pavilion, as well as other related works. The next challenge for the hub is to achieve ISO 9001:2015 and Aiport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) certification among others. In 2019, the Executive Secretary of the Union of Central and West African Airport Managers (UCAAGO), Simon Kaboré, recalled that out of the 192 international airports spread over 54 African countries, 54 are certified and 138 are not certified, with a completion rate of 28.12%: an overall situation that is not very encouraging and is far from the commitments made by the States in 2012.
