ASKY returns to Equatorial Guinea after a 2-month break
The President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, signed a decree on 21 January 2022, easing restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic. In the wake of this, the Central African country reopened its skies, but under certain conditions.
This Thursday, February 3, 2022, ASKY will reopen its Lomé - Malabo route. For the resumption, the pan-African airline will only offer two weekly flights between the capitals of Togo and Equatorial Guinea. This frequency is the maximum imposed by the Equatorial Guinean government on all foreign carriers serving the country. In the same vein, the national flags Ceiba Intercontinental and Cronos Airlines are each allowed to operate three daily domestic routes. Because of the risks posed by the Omicron variant, the country imposes a three-day hotel quarantine for all incoming travellers except diplomatic personnel. "The cost of staying in the hotel will be borne by the traveller," the government said.
ASKY's return will take place eleven days after the reopening of Equatorial Guinea's air borders. These remained closed from 6 December 2021 to 23 January, in order to avoid an increase in both new cases and deaths due to Covid-19, but also the entry into the country of the SARS-COV-2 variant (Omicron), which is now present in almost all countries of the world. This restriction did not apply to cargo and charter flights duly authorised by the competent authorities.
ASKY re-launched its Malabo route in August 2021, a market it had not served since 2012.Equatorial Guinea is normally connected by direct scheduled flights to Cameroon, Gabon, Nigeria, Togo, Ethiopia, Morocco and Spain. These routes are operated by Cronos Airlines, Afrijet, ASKY, Ethiopian Airlines, Lufthansa, Royal Air Maroc and Plus Ultra.
