Air Senegal on mission in Martinique with a view to launching a Dakar/Fort-de-France service
The project of opening, by Air Senegal, of a direct line between Dakar and Fort-de-France, capital of Martinique, follows its way. On Monday 14 March 2022, the Martinique Tourism Committee welcomed a delegation made up of representatives of Air Senegal, travel agents and tourist institutions.
It is a question for the Senegalese party to continue the prospection in order to appreciate the relevance of an air line between Senegal and the Caribbean island. The programme of the delegation led by Papa Mahawa DIOUF, general manager of the Senegalese Agency for Tourism Promotion (ASPT), includes meetings with local authorities, institutional and private actors of the air transport of tourism and travel as well as the discovery of Martinique.
The opening of this air route is so dear to both countries. Already, on February 19, 2020, the director of SAMAC (Société Aéroport Martinique Aimé Césaire), Frantz THODIARD, had already gone to Dakar to discuss the subject. "I have instructed the services to submit to me the technical feasibility file of the line, which will play an essential role in the promotion of memorial tourism", informed the Senegalese Minister of Tourism and Air Transport, Alioune Sarr, on his LinkedIn account.
If this route were to be launched, Air Senegal would become the only airline in the world to offer a direct route between Martinique and Africa, less than 3,000 miles between Dakar and Fort-de-France.
While waiting for the results of this market study, the Senegalese flag carrier - which will host the 54th General Assembly of the Association of African Airlines (AFRAA) - continues to consolidate its network. The airline operates from Dakar's Blaise Diagne International Airport and serves nearly 20 routes, including national and regional destinations, as well as four international destinations, including Washington, Paris, Marseille and Barcelona. Its fleet includes two A330neo, two A321-200, two A319, one A220-300 and two ATR72.
