Togo: €3.3 million to rehabilitate Niamtougou International Airport
At the end of January, the director general of the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) revealed that Togo was currently working on the creation of a new public air carrier, with a view to opening up the country. In this same perspective, the West African country has initiated a plan to rehabilitate its airports.
Work on the rehabilitation of Niamtougou International Airport could begin at any moment. According to the Togolese press, this was announced by the Director General of the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), Colonel Gnama Dokissime Latta, on Monday 7 March 2022. A budget of 2.2 billion CFA francs (3.3 million euros) will be invested to extend the runway (from 2,500 to 3,000 meters), fence the perimeter and secure the terminal.
According to Togo First, this renovation will allow Togo's second airport (located 450 km north of Lomé) to comply with international standards, to serve as an export base for several cash crops (mangoes, tomatoes, etc.) grown in the region, and to boost tourism in the country. According to the DG of ANAC, this will also accelerate the project of opening a line between Lomé and Niamtougou, planned in the perspective of the creation of a new national airline.
"We will soon unveil the name of this company. We have already found a partner," Colonel Latta said on 31 January. The future Togolese standard-bearer will initially have a vocation to open up the country, especially the northern part. But a deployment on regional services is not excluded in its growth phase. For the moment, ASKY, 20% owned by Ethiopian Airlines, is the national flag carrier in Togo.
