EgyptAir returns to Libya after 8 years of absence
Since the signing of a peace agreement in October 2020, between the various parties in conflict, calm has more or less returned to Libya, after nine years of civil war.
Since then, foreign airlines have been planning their return to the country. After an eight-year hiatus, EgyptAir returned to Libya on Monday, April 18, 2022. Flight MS829, operated by Boeing 737-800, linked Cairo to Benghazi, before turning back. From now on, the Egyptian public pavilion will connect the Egyptian capital and the Libyan city once a day. He thus comes to put an end to the monopoly on this road of Afriqiyah, the Libyan national flagship. "In line with EgyptAir's ambitious plan, and in light of the Ministry of Civil Aviation's vision to strengthen its presence in Africa, it has been decided to operate a daily non-stop flight between Cairo and Benghazi.
The operation of this route aims to serve Egyptians residing and working in Libya. But also to promote trade and economic exchanges between Egypt and Libya,” said Captain Amr Abu El-Enein, Chairman and CEO of the EgyptAir group.
Since 2014, his company no longer served Libya, because of the civil war that broke out there, after the assassination of Marshal Muammar Gaddafi, on October 20, 2011. Since then, all foreign airlines had gradually stopped serving Libya. country. Only the Libyan carriers (Afriqiyah Airways, Libyan Airlines, Libyan Wings and Buraq Air) had maintained a few flights, which remained disrupted by sporadic bombardments of certain airports and their surroundings.
But after the signing of a peace agreement in October 2020, between the various parties in conflict, foreign airlines, like Turkish Airlines, are preparing their return, as is Italy. On the other hand, Tunisair finally took the plunge, after several hesitations.
