Tunisia: Air passenger traffic up by 183%.
Air traffic in Tunisia has seen a certain revival since the opening of the borders last year. The boom continues this year with the easing of travel restrictions and the lifting of the inter-governorate travel ban decided in mid-February.
During the first quarter of 2022, Tunisia recorded a 182.9% year-on-year increase in air passenger traffic. According to statistics published on Friday 27 May by the Office of Civil Aviation and Airports (OACA), 1,220,619 passengers were handled between January and March at the four main international airports under its management.
According to the breakdown, the international airport of Tunis Carthage received 1,030,381 passengers (+183%); the airport of Djerba Zarzis handled 1,585,584 (+199.7%); with 2,5259 passengers, the international airport of Sfax Thyna recorded an increase of 195% while the international airport of Tozeur Nefta received 5,196 (+25.1%).
This upward trend in the flow of passengers went hand in hand with the increase in the number of aircraft movements on these platforms, with the exception of the airport of Tozeur (-16.5%). The number of movements at Tunis airport increased by 105.3% (9113 movements), at Djerba Zarzis international airport by 111.7% (1668 movements), and at Sfax Thyna airport by 65.2% (981 movements).
Over the period under consideration, the number of overflights transiting through the Tunisian airspace has also evolved by 58.3% to reach 7568 movements.
Tunisia, which has a long tradition of tourism, should see its passenger flow (especially international) continue to increase during this year with the opening of several seasonal routes. With the peak of the health crisis behind it, the North African country hopes to match the trend of 2019, when it welcomed 9.5 million international visitors.
