Africa: air freight traffic declines for the first time in several years (IATA)
After several years of continuous growth, air freight transport is declining in Africa.
According to the latest figures published by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on Tuesday 7 June 2022, the volume of freight carried by African airlines fell by 6.3% in April 2022, compared to April 2021 (capacity is down by 1.5%). This historic decline is due to the Omicron variant of Covid-19, which is currently hitting China, and the Russian-Ukrainian war, which "continue to create a difficult operational context".These two factors, which did not prevent African freight from remaining in the green last March (growth of 3.1% compared to March 2021), are of course at the origin of the drop in cargo transport worldwide for the past two months.
