In 2021, African airports handled 115 million passengers (+49.4%)
After a disastrous year in 2020, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and associated travel restrictions, air transport recovered in 2021, across the globe, and particularly in Africa.
Passenger traffic in Africa grew strongly in 2021. According to figures published by ACI Africa on Saturday 6 August 2022, 114.8 million passengers passed through the continent's airports during the year. This is a growth of 49.4% compared to 2020; the 3rd best regional performance.
North America (+71%, 1.3 billion) and Latin America and the Caribbean (+55.2%, 435 million) are in the lead. Europe (+39.8, 1.1 billion), the Middle East (+24.9%, 169 million) and Asia Pacific (-4%, 1.5 billion) follow.
South Africa's OR Tambo Intl. Airport & Nigeria's Murtala Muhammed Airport followed recording 8.2 & 5.7 M passengers.
