TAZARA Board Of Directors Convenes Virtually To Propel Railway Forward TAZARA Board Of Directors Convenes Virtually To Propel Railway Forward

In a progressive virtual meeting on the 31st of October, 2023, the Board of Directors of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) demonstrated unwavering commitment to advancing railway operations. This assembly of esteemed members, chaired by Mr. Stephen Mbewe and co-chaired by Prof. Godius W. Kahyarara, navigated through critical discussions and decisions set to shape the future of the railway.

Financial Leap in FY 2022/2023

The Board reviewed the financial performance for FY 2022/2023 and was pleased to report a revenue uptick of 10% over the previous year. A significant factor behind this growth was the re-opening of the Chambeshi Bridge, which greatly enhanced the traffic average haul. Despite facing challenges like infrastructure closures and equipment reliability, the revenue figures reached US$26.78 million, marking a notable increase from the US$24.280 million earned in the prior FY 2021/2022.

Freight and Passenger Dynamics

Freight volume encountered a slight downturn – total freight volumes moved on the TAZARA line dropped by 3.7% from 337,475 metric tons in FY 2021/2022 to 324,903 metric tons in FY 2022/2023. Whilst interstate passenger numbers between Tanzania and Zambia rose by an impressive 14%, attributed to the operational bridge and an uptick in bus fares. The Udzungwa Shuttle’s passenger numbers increased by 2.2%, while the Dar es Salaam City Commuter train experienced a 4.1% dip in patronage.

Embracing Open Access

The engagement of a second private operator under TAZARA’s Open Access Agreement is underway. The Board advocated for an increased allocation of revenue towards infrastructure maintenance, pushing for a rise from 16% to 20%, to ensure track reliability and safety.

Revitalisation Efforts Gain Traction

In a commendable acknowledgement, the Board highlighted the joint dedication of Tanzanian President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan and Zambian President Mr. Hakainde Hichilema towards rejuvenating TAZARA. The introduction of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) for concession negotiations stands as a testament to international confidence in TAZARA’s potential and strategic significance.

Looking Forward

The path for TAZARA’s enhancement is clear, supported by strategic financial management, innovative operational approaches and robust international partnerships. With steadfast dedication, TAZARA is steering towards a promising horizon, reinforcing its critical role in the region’s transportation infrastructure and economic development.
