Lagos State Government takes major step forward with Green Line Rail Mass Transit project Lagos State Government takes major step forward with Green Line Rail Mass Transit project

The Lagos State Government has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the ambitious Green Line Rail Mass Transit Project, which is set to traverse the expansive Lekki corridor within the state. This significant development aims to enhance the public transportation system in Lagos, providing residents with a more efficient and reliable means of commuting.

This important announcement was made by Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Commissioner for Transportation, during a recent meeting with the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Transportation. The committee, led by Hon. Temitope Adewale, the Chairman, visited the ministry to discuss various transportation initiatives and address pertinent questions regarding the state’s transit plans. Mr. Osiyemi emphasized that the introduction of the Green Line will complement the existing Blue Line, which has successfully transported over two million passengers since its launch, as well as the upcoming Red Line, which is projected to accommodate 750,000 passengers daily once operational. This expansion is expected to significantly enhance commuting options for residents across the state.

In addition to discussing the Green Line, the Transport Commissioner revealed that plans for the second phase of the Blue Line, which will extend from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, are currently in progress. This further demonstrates the government's commitment to improving the transportation infrastructure in Lagos and ensuring that it meets the growing demands of its population.

Mr. Osiyemi also highlighted the ministry's efforts to create two major interchanges that will facilitate seamless connectivity between different modes of transportation, particularly in areas where road, water, and rail options converge. This strategic approach aims to eliminate gaps in the transportation network and ensure that all available modes work together efficiently, providing a comprehensive transit solution for the citizens of Lagos.

Addressing concerns raised about the Lekki-Epe Corridor and the potential impact of the refinery located along this route, the Commissioner elaborated on the implementation of the e-call-up system. He explained that there are currently seven trailer parks established to prevent trucks from idling along the corridor, which can lead to congestion and delays. Additionally, an RFID system will be utilized to ensure compliance with the e-call-up protocol, allowing for the identification of any trucks that are not scheduled to be at the port or designated parks.

Moreover, Mr. Osiyemi revealed that there are plans in place to facilitate the movement of containers via water on barges, which will further alleviate congestion on the corridor. This innovative approach aims to streamline logistics and improve the overall efficiency of goods transportation in the region.

In support of these initiatives, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olawale Musa, pointed out that one of the primary obstacles to fully digitizing enforcement measures is the lack of accurate data. He expressed concern that many motorists, particularly those operating commercial vehicles, often submit incorrect information to the government due to the reliance on agents for obtaining essential vehicle and driver documentation. This has resulted in the continued necessity for physical enforcement measures.

To address these challenges, the Ministry has prioritized the training of its enforcement and traffic management officers. This training is designed to equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to maintain order and ensure safety on Lagos roads, ultimately contributing to a more organized and efficient transportation system.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, Hon. Temitope Adewale, commended the Ministry for its proactive approach and dedication to fulfilling its responsibilities as outlined in the THEMES+ Agenda. He urged the Ministry to provide regular project status reports to the House of Assembly, enabling them to monitor progress and stay informed about the ministry's plans. This collaboration will also allow the representatives of the people to support the projects effectively.

Other notable members present during the meeting included Hon. Afinni Olanrewaju, Hon. Sylvester Ogunkelu, Hon. Olootu Emmanuel, and Hon. Kazeem O, along with various officers from the Lagos State House of Assembly and the management team of the Ministry of Transportation. Their collective efforts signify a strong commitment to improving transportation infrastructure and services in Lagos State, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
