Seychelles Tourism Department Introduces Training for Small Operators to Boost Revenue Seychelles Tourism Department Introduces Training for Small Operators to Boost Revenue

The Seychelles Tourism Department has initiated a series of training sessions aimed at assisting small tourism operators in maximizing their revenue during off-peak seasons. Running from November 18 to December 6, the program consists of 11 sessions held across Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue, specifically designed for operators looking to refine their business strategies for both peak and low tourist seasons, promoting year-round viability.

This initiative has seen robust participation, with approximately 90 attendees. The sessions for Praslin and La Digue have already concluded, while the remaining sessions in Mahé are wrapping up soon. Feedback will be gathered to evaluate the effectiveness of the training, and plans are underway to organize additional sessions next year to extend the program's benefits. Low seasons in Seychelles, particularly in May and June, present significant challenges for many small operators due to a marked decline in visitor numbers. Other low periods include the post-Christmas and New Year timeframe, as well as September, following the European school holidays.

Mrs. Sherin Francis, the Principal Secretary for the Tourism Department, highlighted the challenges during the May/June low season, stating, “This year, we noticed a more pronounced dip, especially in May and June. Some small operators are still finding it difficult to adjust and optimize their revenue. When demand peaks, they must capitalize on it, and when it wanes, they need to adjust prices and offer special promotions to maintain steady income.” She further emphasized, “Our goal is to enable small operators to optimize their revenue and be ready for both high and low tourist seasons. This training equips them with strategies to benefit their businesses and ensures they are prepared for future low seasons.”

Small operators, including hotels, guesthouses, and self-catering accommodations, represent a significant portion of Seychelles’ tourism market, accounting for 57.36% of the total room capacity across the islands. Mrs. Francis underscored the importance of supporting these operators, as their success directly influences the broader economic health of the country. The training sessions are offered free of charge, requiring only a one-day commitment from participants. Each session aims to provide practical insights on revenue optimization and effective management strategies during varying tourist seasons. “We are optimistic that this initiative will yield long-term benefits,” Mrs. Francis stated. “By equipping our small operators to navigate off-peak periods, we empower them to manage their income better and secure their long-term sustainability.” The Tourism Department is dedicated to continuing and expanding this program in the future. As Seychelles prepares to address revenue challenges for the low season in 2025, these training sessions represent a crucial step toward fostering resilience within the small tourism sector, enabling them to thrive year-round.
