For years, pilots landing at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport (SLAIIA) in Ibadan have faced unpredictable challenges around the availability of aviation fuel, often causing delays and operational inefficiencies. This long-standing issue has now been decisively addressed with the launch of a state-of-the-art Jet A1 aviation fuel depot by BOVAS Oil and Gas Limited, signaling a major leap forward for the airport’s operational capacity.
During a recent strategic meeting between Airport Manager Gbenga Afuwape and BOVAS Managing Director Dr. Victoria Samson, the transformative impact of this new facility was highlighted as a game-changer for the region’s aviation landscape. The depot not only ensures a constant, reliable supply of Jet A1 fuel directly on-site but also represents significant progress in reducing aircraft turnaround times and cutting overhead costs for carriers operating at SLAIIA.
Afuwape emphasized that removing the “fuel factor” from the list of operational bottlenecks has already brought tangible benefits, particularly for airlines such as Air Peace, which have seen smoother ground operations and improved scheduling efficiency. This advancement is timely, as Oyo State Government prepares to launch Hajj operations this year and Green Africa Airways anticipates resuming flights soon, both of which are expected to drive a surge in passenger volumes through the airport.
Dr. Samson reaffirmed BOVAS’ commitment to scaling fuel supply capabilities in line with the airport’s growth trajectory, positioning the depot as a pivotal element in Oyo State’s wider strategy to enhance aviation infrastructure and services.
