South African Tourism Completes Executive Team With Marketing and Operations Chiefs South African Tourism Completes Executive Team With Marketing and Operations Chiefs

South African Tourism has finalised its senior leadership structure with the appointment of two experienced executives to critical roles overseeing marketing and operations. The announcements complete a comprehensive leadership renewal that positions the national tourism organisation for intensified efforts to attract visitors to Africa's most developed tourism economy.

Sithembile Ndaba assumes the role of Chief Marketing Officer from 1 April 2026, bringing more than 25 years of experience in brand strategy, global positioning, integrated marketing and reputation management. Her appointment places responsibility for destination marketing in the hands of an executive with deep expertise in shaping how audiences perceive South Africa on the world stage.

Ndaba joins from Brand South Africa, where she served as General Manager for Marketing and held acting positions as both Chief Executive Officer and Chief Marketing Officer. During her tenure at the nation branding agency, she played a central role in advancing South Africa's identity and global reputation, leading domestic programmes and representing the organisation at prestigious international platforms including the World Economic Forum and BRICS gatherings.

Her private sector background includes leadership positions at major multinational fast-moving consumer goods companies such as Pioneer Foods, Tiger Brands and Unilever. This combination of public sector destination marketing and commercial brand management experience equips her to navigate the complex stakeholder environment that characterises national tourism promotion.

Ndaba also contributes to global marketing thought leadership through advisory board membership with the CMO Council Sub-Saharan Africa chapter and City Nation Place, a leading platform for place branding and destination marketing based in the United Kingdom. These connections provide valuable networks for benchmarking South African Tourism's approaches against international best practice.

The new Chief Marketing Officer expressed gratitude for the opportunity while emphasising collaborative approaches to the work ahead. She characterised the role as an opportunity to reimagine possibilities while building with others, recognising that effective destination marketing requires partnership across industry stakeholders.

Ismail Dockrat will join as Chief Operating Officer from 1 May 2026, bringing over 25 years of leadership experience spanning aviation, aerospace manufacturing, logistics, distribution, trade promotion, investment facilitation and tourism. His diverse background across multiple sectors provides operational perspectives that should prove valuable in managing South African Tourism's delivery mechanisms.

Dockrat has held senior positions at prominent South African institutions including the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, ARMSCOR, Trade and Investment South Africa, WESGRO, DENEL and Glodina. This track record demonstrates capability in leading complex organisations through challenging environments.

An engineer by training with a Master of Business Administration from the University of Cape Town, Dockrat combines technical expertise with strategic and commercial acumen. He has led organisational turnarounds, strengthened governance frameworks and driven digital transformation initiatives that enhanced operational efficiency and supported sustainable growth.

Recognition for his leadership includes South Africa's Boss of the Year award in 2005. He holds fellowships with the Sainsbury Management Fellows and the Africa Leadership Initiative, and has served as a visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge. These credentials reflect sustained excellence across his career.

Dockrat expressed pride in serving his country and belief in South Africa's position among the world's leading destinations. He committed to driving operational excellence and innovation while working closely with teams and partners to showcase the nation's offerings to global audiences.

These appointments follow recent additions to the executive team including the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Audit Executive appointed in January 2026, and the Chief Convention Bureau Officer who joined in December 2025. The completed leadership structure enhances South African Tourism's capacity to deliver on its mandate of marketing the country as a globally competitive destination.

For travel professionals across Africa, the strengthened leadership signals continued investment in destination marketing that benefits the broader regional tourism ecosystem. South Africa's success in attracting international visitors creates spillover opportunities for neighbouring countries included in multi-destination itineraries, making these appointments relevant well beyond national borders.
