Ethiopian Airlines has marked a remarkable milestone with celebrations honouring eighty years of continuous aviation operations, choosing Lagos as a key venue to recognise the carrier's enduring relationship with Nigeria. The event at Murtala Muhammed International Airport brought together aviation officials, travel trade representatives, labour leaders, and industry partners to acknowledge Africa's largest airline and its sustained commitment to the Nigerian market.
The carrier's journey from a single route in 1946 to operating over 140 aircraft across 144 destinations worldwide represents one of African aviation's most compelling success stories. For Nigerian stakeholders, the celebration carried particular significance given that Ethiopian Airlines has maintained uninterrupted service to Nigeria since 1960, commencing operations shortly after the country gained independence. Speaking on behalf of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Terminal Manager Olatokunbo Arewa described Ethiopian Airlines as a dependable partner whose operations have been characterised by consistency and strong collaboration. Yinka Folami, President of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies, praised the carrier for standing by the Nigerian market during exceptionally challenging periods. During the COVID-19 crisis and the subsequent era when airline funds became trapped within the Nigerian banking system, Ethiopian Airlines maintained ticket sales in naira and kept fares relatively stable. From the labour perspective, Moses Umanao, National Vice President of the National Union of Air Transport Employees, commended the airline's employee-friendly policies and its reputation for supporting workforce welfare.
