Preferred Hotels & Resorts Accelerates African Growth With Eleven New Luxury Properties
The African hospitality landscape is witnessing a powerful wave of investment as one of the globe's most influential independent hotel networks deepens its commitment to the continent. Preferred Hotels & Resorts has unveiled an ambitious expansion strategy that sees its African footprint grow to 37 member properties spanning nine nations, signalling robust confidence in the region's tourism potential.
The numbers paint a compelling picture for travel professionals across sub-Saharan Africa. Year-on-year performance metrics reveal a 32 percent surge in bookings, accompanied by a 55 percent increase in room nights sold. Perhaps most striking is the 73 percent leap in revenue, coupled with a healthy 12 percent rise in average daily rates. These figures demonstrate that discerning international visitors are not merely arriving in greater numbers but are also willing to invest more substantially in quality African experiences.
According to Saurabh Rai, Executive Vice President for South Asia, Middle East and Africa, the continent represents a genuine priority for the brand's global ambitions. The executive highlighted that sustained demand from international travellers seeking longer, more immersive journeys continues to drive this strategic focus. This observation aligns with broader industry trends suggesting that modern luxury travellers increasingly prioritise authentic, experience-rich itineraries over conventional resort holidays.
The portfolio now stretches across South Africa, Kenya, Morocco, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Tanzania, Mauritius, Madagascar, and Ghana. Between the final quarter of 2025 and the opening months of 2026, the network welcomed eleven fresh additions, representing its most significant period of African portfolio growth in recent memory. Notably, this includes two entirely new hotel launches alongside five luxury Nile River cruise experiences, diversifying the product offering available to travel professionals.
Regional performance patterns offer valuable intelligence for those selling African destinations. South Africa maintains its position as a continental powerhouse, with Cape Town and the greater Kruger region attracting strong international leisure demand while the meetings and incentives segment demonstrates steady recovery. East Africa continues to captivate safari enthusiasts, with growing interest from European and North American source markets fuelling bookings. Meanwhile, the Indian Ocean Islands remain popular for luxury beach extensions, frequently packaged alongside wildlife experiences.
Among the newly integrated properties, several stand out for their distinctive positioning. ENVI Paje brings eco-conscious barefoot luxury to Zanzibar's tranquil southeast coastline, scheduled to welcome guests in June with 22 nature-immersed villas. Kenya's Lion in the Sun Boutique Hotel and Spa offers intimate Swahili charm along the Malindi coast, delivering personalised wellness-focused retreats. South Africa gains the Last Word Makanyane in Madikwe Game Reserve, opening in July with eight river-facing suites and Big Five viewing opportunities.
The residences category also expands with exclusive-use properties catering to private groups seeking unhurried escapes. Owloon Manor House in the Cape Winelands provides a ten-bedroom estate experience complete with private chef services and bespoke wellness programming. Yellowwood Cottage offers an off-grid coastal sanctuary within the West Coast National Park, appealing to nature lovers seeking seclusion.
Egypt features prominently in the expansion, with Coral Sea Holiday Resort bringing family-friendly Red Sea energy to the portfolio alongside five Nile cruise vessels operating between Luxor and Aswan. These riverboat experiences range from contemporary floating hotels to intimate traditional dahabiyas.
Celeste Vogel, Account Director for Africa, emphasised the commercial opportunity this expanded portfolio presents for regional travel businesses. Beyond property access, partner agents benefit from training support, competitive commission structures, and integration with global sales and marketing channels. The brand maintains active trade engagement throughout 2026, including participation at Africa's Travel Indaba in May, a Southern African roadshow across Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe in June, and a West African showcase in Lagos come September.
For travel professionals navigating an increasingly competitive marketplace, partnerships with globally recognised yet independently spirited hotel networks offer genuine differentiation when crafting client proposals.
