Etihad Airways Confirms Abu Dhabi-Harare Service from March 2027
International connectivity to Zimbabwe is set to strengthen significantly as Etihad Airways prepares to launch scheduled services between Abu Dhabi and Harare. The UAE national carrier has confirmed that flights will commence on 24 March 2027, operating three times weekly and forming part of an ambitious six-destination African network expansion.
For travel professionals across sub-Saharan Africa, this announcement represents a meaningful shift in routing options for passengers travelling between Zimbabwe and markets across Europe, Asia, India, and the Middle East. The new service positions Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport as an alternative gateway, reducing reliance on traditional transit hubs such as Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Doha, and Dubai.
The Harare route will operate as part of an innovative triangular service connecting Abu Dhabi with both Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Aircraft will depart Abu Dhabi in the early hours, arriving in Harare before continuing to Lubumbashi, the economic centre of the DRC's copper mining region. The return leg will then fly directly back to Abu Dhabi, completing the circuit.
Published schedule information indicates flights will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays using the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Departure from Abu Dhabi is planned for 02:00, with arrival in Harare at 07:05 local time. The aircraft will then depart Harare at 08:25, reaching Lubumbashi at 09:50 before the final sector back to the Gulf.
This timing has been structured to facilitate convenient onward connections through Abu Dhabi to destinations across the airline's global network. Passengers originating from cities such as London, Frankfurt, Mumbai, Bangkok, Manila, and Beijing will gain access to Zimbabwe through seamless one-stop itineraries. The arrangement proves particularly advantageous for travellers seeking premium cabin options and competitive pricing on long-haul sectors.
The Harare service forms part of a broader African expansion that underscores Etihad's strategic ambitions on the continent. Additional routes launching during the same period include services to Accra in Ghana, Lagos in Nigeria, Kinshasa in the DRC, and Asmara in Eritrea. The Eritrean capital will be the first to receive service, with flights beginning on 7 November 2026, while the remaining destinations follow from March 2027.
Lagos will benefit from daily frequencies, reflecting strong demand in the Nigerian market, while Accra and Kinshasa will each receive multiple weekly services. The combined effect of these additions substantially increases Etihad's African footprint and positions the carrier as a serious competitor to established operators serving the continent.
According to airline leadership, the expansion responds to rising demand across African markets and aligns with the UAE's deepening economic ties with the continent. Sectors including energy, infrastructure, logistics, and mining are driving increased business travel between Africa and the Gulf, while leisure tourism continues to grow as travellers discover the diverse landscapes and wildlife experiences available across the region.
For Zimbabwe's tourism sector, the arrival of a premium Gulf carrier introduces welcome competition and greater choice. Tour operators packaging Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park, Mana Pools, and the Eastern Highlands can now offer clients routing options through Abu Dhabi alongside existing connections. Business travellers will similarly benefit from improved access to Asian and Middle Eastern commercial centres.
The linked service to Lubumbashi also creates opportunities for multi-destination itineraries combining Zimbabwe with the southern DRC, potentially appealing to corporate travellers with interests in the mining sector or adventurous tourists seeking less-visited destinations.
Travel businesses should begin preparing for the new service by familiarising themselves with Etihad's product offerings and connection possibilities. With almost a year until launch, there remains ample time to develop packages and marketing strategies that leverage this enhanced connectivity. The addition of another major international carrier to Zimbabwe's aviation landscape bodes well for inbound tourism growth and reinforces the destination's appeal to global travellers.
