P& O Cruises Features Cape Town-Southampton Voyage in Record 2028 Schedule P& O Cruises Features Cape Town-Southampton Voyage in Record 2028 Schedule

British cruise operator P& O Cruises has unveiled its most extensive seasonal programme to date, with the summer 2028 schedule featuring 215 sailings across seven vessels. Of particular interest to the African travel trade is the inclusion of a departure from Cape Town, positioning South Africa as a key link in the line's global deployment strategy.

The Cape Town sailing will operate aboard Arcadia, one of the fleet's smaller adult-focused ships. Guests will embark on 22 April 2028 for a 19-night voyage concluding in Southampton on 10 May. This routing connects southern Africa with Europe through a carefully curated sequence of port calls that showcase diverse coastal destinations along the way.

The itinerary includes a stop in Walvis Bay, Namibia on 25 April, offering passengers an opportunity to experience the dramatic desert landscapes and marine wildlife of the Skeleton Coast region. The vessel will then cross the Atlantic, calling at Mindelo in Cape Verde on 3 May before reaching Tenerife in the Canary Islands on 6 May. From there, Arcadia will complete her journey northward to the United Kingdom.

This voyage forms part of the cruise line's repositioning schedule, a logistical practice whereby ships transition between seasonal deployment regions. For African tourism stakeholders, such itineraries represent valuable opportunities to attract international visitors seeking unique travel experiences that combine multiple destinations within a single journey.

The broader summer 2028 programme extends from March through October, with departures operating from Southampton alongside fly-cruise options from Malta. Collectively, the schedule covers 121 destinations across 29 countries, ranging from short breaks to extended voyages lasting up to 30 nights.

Northern Europe features prominently within the programme, with an expanded selection of Norwegian fjords itineraries and 36 weekend departures scheduled between May and September. The introduction of Friday departures aims to provide greater flexibility for guests planning shorter getaways. Across the full schedule, 64 overnight port calls and 69 late evening departures have been incorporated, allowing passengers extended time to explore destinations.

Fleet deployment reflects a strategic mix of vessel sizes and itinerary types. Arcadia and Aurora, both designed for adult-only cruising, will focus on Northern Europe and Iceland while also offering selected family-friendly sailings ranging from three to 21 nights. Aurora will operate a notable 21-night Arctic voyage in August 2028, featuring an overnight stay in Reykjavik.

Larger vessels within the fleet will serve Mediterranean and transatlantic routes. Arvia will debut new itineraries combining Northern and Western Europe, while Azura will feature an overnight call in Livorno, providing access to Florence and Pisa. Mediterranean sailings aboard Britannia and Ventura will include itineraries with calls at Civitavecchia, the gateway port for Rome.

The programme also incorporates longer voyages to North America, with sailings of up to 30 nights reaching the United States and Canada. Shorter European and Canary Islands cruises round out the offering, catering to guests with varying time and budget considerations.

For African travel professionals, the Cape Town departure presents a compelling product to market to outbound clients seeking premium cruise experiences. Pricing for the 19-night voyage begins at approximately 2,279 British pounds per person for a sea view cabin based on double occupancy. Given the limited number of long-haul itineraries within the programme, early booking will likely prove essential for clients interested in this particular sailing.

The scale of the announcement underscores sustained global demand for cruise holidays and highlights the continued importance of South Africa within international maritime tourism. As cruise lines expand their deployment networks, Cape Town's role as a seasonal hub positions the destination favourably for future growth in this lucrative market segment.
