Cape Verde Backs CVsky Airways With Sovereign Guarantee to Boost Inter-Island Air Connectivity
The aviation landscape in West Africa's island nation of Cape Verde is undergoing a noteworthy transformation, as the government has stepped forward with a substantial financial backing to strengthen its newly established domestic carrier. In a strategic move designed to stabilise inter-island travel, authorities in Praia have approved a sovereign guarantee worth six million US dollars to support the leasing of two ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft for the state-owned airline Linhas Aéreas de Cabo Verde (LACV), which operates commercially under the brand CVsky Airways.
This development represents a significant vote of confidence in the young carrier, which only obtained its Air Operator Certificate in December 2025. By guaranteeing the lease arrangement, the government is ensuring that the aircraft, sourced through a financial leasing agreement with the international lessor Truenoord, can be deployed without delay to serve the country's scattered island geography. For an archipelago of ten islands separated by ocean, reliable air links are not a luxury but a fundamental necessity for tourism, commerce, and everyday mobility.
The choice of the ATR 72-600 is particularly well-suited to Cape Verde's operational needs. This modern turboprop is recognised globally for its fuel efficiency, low operating costs, and strong performance on short regional routes. With a capacity of around 70 passengers, the aircraft strikes an ideal balance for serving inter-island demand, where flights are typically brief but frequent. The first of the two aircraft arrived in the country in September 2025, with the second following shortly afterwards under the same long-term lease structure, allowing CVsky to build a coherent and standardised fleet from the outset.
For African travel professionals, the resurgence of dependable inter-island air services in Cape Verde opens up fresh opportunities. The destination has long been popular with European holidaymakers drawn to its sun-soaked beaches, volcanic landscapes, and rich Creole culture. However, fleet limitations and operational disruptions involving older aircraft had previously constrained the country's ability to deliver seamless multi-island itineraries. With CVsky now positioned to stabilise domestic operations, tour operators across sub-Saharan Africa can begin packaging more ambitious island-hopping experiences, knowing that internal connections will be more dependable.
Industry observers have also pointed out that there is significant unmet demand within the domestic travel market, both from residents moving between islands and from international visitors seeking to explore beyond the most well-known destinations such as Sal and Boa Vista. Lesser-visited islands like Brava, São Nicolau, and Fogo, with its dramatic volcano, stand to benefit immensely from improved air connectivity. This bodes well for the development of niche tourism segments, including adventure travel, cultural tourism, and eco-tourism, all areas where African destinations are increasingly competing for attention on the global stage.
The sovereign guarantee model adopted by Cape Verde reflects a broader pattern emerging across the continent, where governments are stepping in to support fragile but strategically important national carriers. Similar arrangements have been seen with Madagascar Airlines and other state-backed operators seeking to modernise their fleets in the face of tight credit markets and rising leasing costs. Such partnerships between governments and aircraft lessors are likely to shape the future of African aviation finance in the years ahead.
For the African travel trade, the launch and consolidation of CVsky Airways is a development worth watching closely. As Cape Verde positions itself as a more integrated and accessible destination, agents and tour planners would do well to engage early with the airline's distribution channels, explore co-operative arrangements, and prepare to introduce their clients to a richer, more varied Cape Verdean experience in the coming seasons.
