Seychelles International Airways plans to start operations on September 10 with an A340-600
Seychelles International Airways' first flight could take place on September 10. In any case, this is the date announced by the top management of the new Seychelles private company, during a recent press conference. According to Seychelles News Agency, this inaugural flight will be mixed (passengers and cargo). But subsequently, the newcomer from the Seychelles sky will focus first on freight transport, given the strong demand induced by the Covid-19 pandemic.
For the start of its activities, the new carrier will operate a chartered Airbus A340-600. “We will not be focusing on passenger flights at this time, unless there is a request or a charter flight, which will follow all Department of Health procedures. We will focus on bringing freight into the country, knowing that this is what Seychelles needs, ”said Robert Marie (photo), the managing director of the young company.
Despite this circumstantial reality, the carrier's project remains long-haul intercontinental flights. In the long term, its promoter also plans to build a modern terminal. Robert Marie is also confident in his business plan developed with the support of local and foreign banks and a partnership with a French company Euro-Africa Trading.
As a reminder, the plan to create this new company was born in 2011, when Air Seychelles was forced to reduce its staff due to its financial difficulties. Former pilot of the national company, Robert Marie feared that in the event of bankruptcy of the latter, foreign carriers would dominate traffic on the island, as British Airways and Air France did in 1985. Despite his concerns, Air Seychelles remains alive, and will arguably be Seychelles International Airways' main competitor in the country.
