Int'l Entebbe Airport (Uganda): over 237,000 passengers and 16,200 tonnes of cargo in Q2
Before the pandemic, the Entebbe hub was handling about 89 aircraft movements per day. But at the height of the health crisis last year, annual traffic more than doubled to just 14,437 movements by 31 December 2020. With the gradual lifting of travel restrictions since 1 October last year, however, there has been a resurgence in traffic.
Entebbe International Airport continues to see a resurgence in traffic. In a tweet from its spokesperson - Vianney M. Luggya - on 21 July, the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) presented the operational record of the hub over the past three months.
Between April and June 2021, Uganda's main hub handled 237,589 passengers. In detail, 85,054 passengers were recorded in April, 77,063 in May and 75,472 in June (29,209 arrivals, 40,137 departures and 6,136 transits).
Freight activity also improved. 31,856 tonnes were handled between January and June 2021 on the platform. This is a significant improvement on the 26,773 tonnes of freight handled over the same period in 2020. Specifically, in the first half of 2021, the airport handled 4,911 tonnes of cargo in January, 4,766 in February, 5,977 in March, 5,725 in April, 5,329 in May and 5,148 in June.
Since January 2021, the Entebbe airport hub has seen a good upturn in activity. On 16 March, UCAA CEO Fred Bamwesigye, speaking on the sidelines of a visit by parliamentarians, noted an increase in commercial aircraft movements: an average of 48 per day in January and February.
